Early findings show reductions in coronary artery calcium scores and a consistent positive pattern across the first participant results released.
The first results from a 50-person pilot study examining AtheroCare Cyclodextrin (Standard) have now been released.
Of the first six participants, four recorded reductions in coronary artery calcium (CAC) scores, while the remaining two showed slower reported CAC progression compared with their previous rate of progression.
As a result, every participant included in the first release recorded either a reduction in CAC or a slower reported rate of progression.
Some participants also reported improvements in their symptoms.
The study is being conducted by cardiologist Dr. James C. Roberts, MD, FACC, FAARFM, and is examining changes in CAC scores following approximately six months of daily use of AtheroCare Cyclodextrin (Standard).
A strong early pattern
Coronary artery calcium scoring provides a numerical measure of calcium within the coronary arteries. The study is tracking how these scores change over the course of the approximately six-month program.
The first results show two distinct outcomes.
Four participants recorded an actual reduction in their CAC score. The other two continued to show CAC progression, but at a slower reported rate than they had experienced previously.
These outcomes are different and are being reported separately. However, the consistency across the first six participants creates a promising early pattern as the wider study continues.
The symptom improvements reported by some participants are additional observations and are separate from the CAC measurements being examined in the study.
Approximately six months of daily use
Participants use one tube of AtheroCare Cyclodextrin (Standard) per day for approximately six months, amounting to around 180 doses over the full period.
The findings released to date relate specifically to the Standard version of AtheroCare Cyclodextrin.
Dr. Roberts is overseeing the study, collecting participant data and analysing the results as participants complete the program and their follow-up data becomes available.
The wider 50-person study continues
The six results released so far represent an early stage of the planned 50-person study and should be considered preliminary.
They do not determine what the final results across the complete study population will show, nor can the outcomes of the first six participants be assumed to represent those of all 50.
What they provide is the first indication of the pattern emerging from the study.
As additional participants complete the program, the larger dataset will provide a clearer picture of whether the CAC reductions and slower reported progression observed in these initial results continue across the wider group.
